If you are an instructional designer, technical writer or trainer, you have no doubt spent time attempting to perfect the art of teaching programs using fewer and fewer words. If you are in the business of educating, you know how difficult this job can be.
These days, interactive lessons that can be viewed over the Internet or from a mobile device are all the rage. There are many programs that can be used to capture a computer's screen, mouse action and audio. Unfortunately, the resulting movies can be huge--a five minute lesson could easily gobble up nearly 100mb of storage space on a hard drive. Downloading a file that large will take a lot of time, even if a user has a fast Internet connection. Large file sizes are just part of the problem. The movies may not be cross-platform (they may not work on both Macs and PCs). Interactivity is a feature most of the "mouse capture" applications do not support. And there are few of these programs that allow images to be imported.
In short, the technology for creating interactive lessons WAS bad. But not anymore. Using Adobe Captivate 6, you can capture screen actions on your computer and quickly turn them into highly interactive software simulations.
This book includes, but is not limited to, lessons on recording screen actions, adding objects to slides (captions, images, buttons, click box and text entry boxes), using the Timeline, adding animation, adding interactivty, adding and editing audio, and publishing your lessons for the widest possible audience (including SWFs and HTML5).

Congrats Mr. Siegel on writing a lesson book that WORKS! This was THE first software instruction book that caused NO frustration or confusion. I was able to progress through it, understanding everything along the way. I only stumbled once, which is pretty dang amazing in itself, but just backing up a couple of pages showed me what I'd missed. The "confidence" exercises were perfectly conceived. They didn't just have a particular thing done once, but three times, which made it stick in memory so much better. Well done.I'm using the Mac version of Captivate 6. Being new to Mac, I expected to experience a lot of assumptions about what the learner would already know, but you had already thought it through -- there were the Mac idiosyncrasies right along with the Windows! Your book not only walked me through the steep learning curve for Captivate, it also helped me learn more about using a Mac. Idiot proof! Thank you.
I used the Kindle version of your book and would highly recommend it to anyone starting out with Captivate. It really helped to zoom some of the illustrations that were pretty small.

I purchased this product for our training staff to create training sessions for our software. They say it works well and is very easy to follow and their presentations look pretty good, so it must work.
I have not worked through this book, yet, but I have downloaded the files and have used it as a reference for a project I am working on. Learning Captivate is a bit intimidating, but it is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. This book has helped to make it doable.
Love the book and the binding (spiral bound). This book is a bargain for those wanting to learn Adobe Captivate software. The format is wonderful, introduces a topic, walks you through doing it, and then gives you exercises to do. Wish all software books could be this helpful. Mr. Siegel's book, Adobe Captivate 6 Beyond the Essentials, is wonderful too!
Structured as a lesson-by-lesson guide, this book would be most useful to someone who has time to work through all of its lessons from beginning to end. I didn't have that kind of time. Not so useful as a quick reference. That said, it has provided me with a few answers that made it worth the purchase.
I see like most of the other reviewers, I am an instructor that uses this book to teach classes. It is an excellent resource. I would re-arrange the book slightly because the quizzing portion is covered at the end, which is what many people come to Captivate to learn. I would put that in the middle is my only complaint.
The caveat If you teach this course and your students are using the bound-book format version, and you are using the /MOBI version, then you will find a problem. All of the student activities are interspersed throughout the bound-book version, but in the e-book version, the activities are all at the end.
This can lead to problems because the student activities are helpful and important in certain places to make the learning modules flow correctly. I don't know what can be done about that, but it's something to be wary of. Still, five out of five for the content quality.
I bought this book as a required textbook for a graduate class I was taking in Instructional Design and Technology at CA State University. This book was WONDERFUL regarding its clarity. Learning a new software program can be exhausting, but this book takes it one step at a time and by the end of it, I was able to build interactive learning projects! I will keep this book as a reference manual, it is well laid out, well organized, it is clear in its instructions and best of all, when you follow the instructions, you get the expected results! I am now going to buy this author's next book on this topic, Beyond the Essentials, as I cannot wait to learn more. I looked at a tutorial on Lynda.com for Captivate 6 and honestly, it was nowhere as clear as this book is. I highly recommend this as a companion for anyone who has just bought Captivate 6 software.
This workbook, as well as the "Beyond the Essentials" workbook are worth more than 5 stars! I became a fan with Captivate 4 and 5 physical workbooks. This is my first venture into the version and I am not disappointed. Other than the normal "getting over" writing in a physical book, having it on the is fantastic. As an instructor, these are great resources to teach from. As a student these are great skill-building and reference workbooks. For review, or self-paced study, there ARE NO OTHER resources as well done as this. It is well-written and well-executed. Practice modules are appropriate and applicable. Adult learners will especially benefit with the skills assessment provided with each learning activity. I'd give Kevin Siegel 10 stars just for being this consistently fabulous! Well done. You'll want to get both levels! Learning this way is addictive.
